Fall in NYC
Fall is the favorite season for many New Yorkers, and a great time for visitors to explore NYC.
Cooler weather brings festivals, arts and culture events, and a surprising number of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors in the heart of the city. Here are a few of our Greeters’ favorite ways to celebrate fall in New York City.
New York Botanical Garden! It’s so autumnal. I love being able to see beautiful nature and feel like I’m not in the city without traveling far. I also love walking around the Upper West Side and West Village to enjoy beautiful architecture with some nice crisp fall air.

Open House New York Weekend, from October 16–18, a free, citywide event that allows the public to discover something new and interesting about our city.
Also, AIA (American Institute of Architects)-NY Archtober, a month-long festival of architecture-based activities and programs, including tours of new and in-progress projects.

I love to walk around the reservoir in Central Park. If the weather is good, I make a trip to Prospect Park to walk through the park and pick up Osage oranges, which are green and look like grapefruit.
—Sydney Fox
The Atlantic Antic on September 27 in Brooklyn, NYC’s best street fair with local food, performers, and amazing shopping!
For beautiful fall foliage, my favorite spots include Fort Tryon Park and the Cloisters, the New York Botanical Garden, and Green-Wood Cemetery. You can also take an Oktoberfest ferry cruise up the Hudson to Bear Mountain.

The Blessing of the Animals at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on October 4; the MS Bike Ride, raising funds to support people with multiple sclerosis, on October 18; the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade on October 31; and the balloon inflation on the Upper West Side from 1:00–6:00 PM on November 25, the day before the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
—Mac Chiulli
Having my girls participate in Boo at the Zoo at the Bronx Zoo, weekends from September 26 to November 1! The kids have SO much fun and it is such a wonderful activity to do with the family.

Go to a football game at Columbia University’s stadium in Inwood.

Central Park, particularly the area around Pilgrim Hill. It’s absolutely magical at peak leaf season.

Visit the West Side Community Garden.

I love Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Promenade in Brooklyn Heights.

Walk through Brooklyn Heights and Carroll Gardens to see the pumpkins and ghost art works on display among the brownstone stoops and facades.
