<image:title>Blog - Layers, Landmarks, and New Friends: A First-time Visit to New York - A short walk from Ayda’s hotel took them to Grand Central Terminal, one of the city’s two main railroad stations with Metro-North trains serving areas north of NYC and the Long Island Railroad sending trains to the east.</image:title>
<image:caption>The current building opened in 1913 and features shopping and dining options. The information desk on the main concourse is topped by a four-sided brass clock, and “under the clock at Grand Central” has been a popular meeting place for more than a century. The concourse’s celestial ceiling shows numerous stars and planets in a beautiful, though not entirely accurate, depiction of the night sky. Joan took Ayda to the “whispering gallery,” a domed intersection of walkways on the station’s lower level. Stand in one corner of the archway, and even the faintest whisper will be heard by someone standing in the opposite corner.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Layers, Landmarks, and New Friends: A First-time Visit to New York - A walk along Wall Street was next on the agenda with stops at two iconic pieces of public art: the Charging Bull and Fearless Girl statues.</image:title>
<image:caption>Joan led Ayda to Stone Street, a pedestrian-only cobblestone street in the Financial District that was home to NYC’s first breweries. Numerous bars and restaurants line the street and patrons enjoy eating and drinking at outdoor tables—weather permitting. Next stop: Fraunces Tavern at the corner of Pearl and Broad Streets, built in 1719 as a private home. It became a tavern after Samuel Fraunces purchased the building in 1762 and later was a frequent meeting place for American revolutionaries, including Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, who dined there together a week before their duel. The site now includes both a museum and a modern pub.</image:caption>

The outdoor Memorial Plaza is open every day and features reflecting pools in the footprints of the Twin Towers. The Oculus transportation hub across the street from the memorial was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Built of white metal-clad steel, the structure symbolizes a hand releasing a dove. As the story goes, he saw a movie there on a Friday, learned the building was scheduled to be torn down on Monday, and bought it over the weekend to preserve it. He renamed it the United Palace, reflecting the site’s spiritual mission and role as a “palace” for the community. It remained an active place of worship until 2022.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Greeted in London: Discovering Fitzrovia - I'd lived in London years ago and assumed I knew it fairly well. But there's nothing like exploring with a local to make a familiar city feel new. London Greeters pairs visitors with residents to discover lesser-seen corners, much as our program does in New York. I submitted a request through the London Greeters website and received an email from Paul Olins.</image:title>
<image:caption>Paul has been a Greeter for more than a decade and now is the head of the London program. He suggested we meet in his own neighborhood: Fitzrovia. Despite my time in London, I’d never properly explored this pocket of central London tucked between Oxford Street and Euston Road, with Bloomsbury to the east and Marylebone to the west. It’s right in the heart of things, yet I’d somehow missed it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Greeted in London: Discovering Fitzrovia - We met at the Fitzroy Tavern on Charlotte Street, which was alive with that particular pre-Christmas energy London does so well. We felt so happy to be there!</image:title>
<image:caption>Paul greeted us warmly and, almost immediately, launched into Fitzrovia’s backstory, starting with the name itself. “Fitzroy,” he explained, comes from the Norman French “fils du roi”—son of the king—and traces to Henry FitzRoy, an illegitimate son of Charles II who became the 1st Duke of Grafton. His descendants helped shape the area through marriage, inheritance, and development. The tavern made an apt prologue. Long associated with Fitzrovia’s bohemian reputation, it has been a gathering place for writers and artists: Dylan Thomas and George Orwell among the names most often linked to it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Walking Harlem’s History on International Greeter Day - Our first stop set a spiritual tone. Inside the historic Mount Olivet Baptist Church, at Lenox Avenue (Malcolm X Boulevard) and 120th Street, we joined the Harlem Gospel Series for an hour of uplifting music that drew the audience into clapping, singing, and swaying along.</image:title>
<image:caption>Built in 1907 as Temple Israel, a grand Reform synagogue, the building still bears traces of its origins. Stars of David can be seen in the column capitals and fanlights — a reminder that these streets have long welcomed diverse communities. The stone’s warm reddish-brown hue gave the architectural style its enduring name.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Walking Harlem’s History on International Greeter Day - The final leg of our walk brought us to 125th Street, where history and commerce meet. Johnson highlighted cultural landmarks such as the Studio Museum in Harlem (founded in 1968 and original home to the James Van Der Zee archive, now stewarded by The Metropolitan Museum of Art since 2021) and the storied Hotel Theresa, once known as the “Waldorf of Harlem.” The hotel famously hosted figures from Josephine Baker and Duke Ellington to Fidel Castro.</image:title>

<image:caption>City planners, particularly Manhattan Borough President George McAneny, played a foundational role in shaping the street's development. Beginning in 1913, McAneny collaborated with planner Edward M. Bassett to create the Heights of Buildings Commission, which led to the landmark 1916 Zoning Resolution—the first citywide zoning law in the United States. This groundbreaking legislation established building limits and setbacks to preserve street-level light and air. Beyond zoning reform, McAneny championed citywide "street widening" campaigns designed to modernize sidewalks for pedestrian traffic. These ambitious efforts involved removing "street furniture"—everything from staircases and arcades to porticos and small gardens. His dedication to these sweeping changes earned him a memorable nickname from the New York Tribune: the "Barber for Buildings."</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - Discovering 57th Street: A Greeters' Trip with Lester Barnett</image:title>
<image:caption>Lester also highlighted how commercial forces have once again reshaped 57th Street's identity. Zoning modifications during Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration in the early 21st century and the subsequent selling of air rights made possible the construction of today's supertall towers along what's now aptly dubbed "Billionaires' Row."</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - One Block, Four Hours, Many Special Moments - The Greet started at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture on Lenox Avenue (also called Malcolm X Boulevard) at 135th Street in Harlem. This branch of the New York Public Library houses an archive of materials related to the African diaspora and the African-American experience. The library was named for Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, a Puerto Rican historian, writer, and activist whose collection of art, literature, and other items related to African history were purchased to become the basis of the Schomburg collection.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - One Block, Four Hours, Many Special Moments - Crossing the street one block west of the YMCA brought Petra and Leigh to a small parking lot with murals honoring jazz trumpeter and composer Dizzy Gillespie. Gillespie was an anti-war and civil rights activist, and in the 1960s he became a Bahá’i, drawn by the faith’s emphasis on the oneness of humanity and elimination of racism. One of the Harlem murals shows Gillespie with Iranian schoolchildren—the Bahá’i faith began in Iran—along with the hashtag #educationisnotacrime, in recognition of Gillespie’s commitment to equal educational opportunity for all.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - One Block, Four Hours, Many Special Moments - Leigh and Petra were welcomed at the 32nd Precinct and were referred to Officer Denton from the Community Affairs Bureau. When he learned of Petra’s request, he excused himself for a few minutes and returned with an old jacket of his own, scissors, and a box cutter. As they sat together, he removed not only two NYPD patches, but three stripes honoring his years on the force—one stripe for every five years. Denton said that his current jacket has four stripes; he and Petra are both 20-year veterans of the police.</image:title>

He took us to the Staten Island Ferry, which was unique because of the amazing views and awesome pictures that we got to take. He showed us around Chinatown, which was cool because of all the great food and places to shop. We all went to a place called Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles, which was delicious. While we were walking I saw a ton of cool gift shops with T-shirts to keychains.</image:title>

<image:caption>Some of the changes were more personal to Jeff’s family history. Further along Broadway, the group visited the block where Jeff’s maternal grandfather owned the Elmhurst 5*10*25 ¢ Dept Store, colloquially known as Bokser’s, the family’s surname. Jeff’s grandparents lived in the apartment directly above the store, and he grew up in the apartment above them. Jeff’s dad bought the business in the mid-1960s. The family home later became a Buddhist meditation center and is now a construction site—a typical New York story and another in the long line of neighborhood transitions.</image:caption>

In addition to volunteering with Big Apple Greeter, Jesse runs the Central Park Sketching Meetup, which gives people the chance to explore new neighborhoods while creating and sharing their drawings with other New Yorkers. Jesse is also chief product officer at Voxy, a firm that develops language-training software and classes for businesses.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Not Your Typical Halloween Witches - In 17th century America, witches reflected people’s strong beliefs — they were real. The Massachusetts Bay Colony saw itself as a ‘city on a hill,’ exemplifying high moral standards. Cotton Mather, a Puritan oligarch, saw the devil as a small, dark man—resembling indigenous people—who could shape shift. A special court in Salem judged witchcraft cases involving the disenfranchised (women), enslaved, and indigenous people. Women were the majority of the accused, along with some men: accused witches ranged from four-year-old girls to well-respected women in their 70s. Underlying, but unacknowledged, interpersonal issues could spark accusations: property disputes, jealousy or envy of someone’s wealth.</image:title>

<image:caption>Next stop was the Harlem Walk of Fame where we saw seventeen bronze plaques on the ground honoring great African Americans, great New Yorkers, and great Harlem-ites, such as singer Ella Fitzgerald, Mayor David Dinkins, and bandleader Tito Puente. At 229 West 135th Street was a building with two enormous painted murals of jazz legend John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie (photo left by Leigh Hallingby). Created in 2017 by artists Brandan Odums from New Orleans and Marthalicia Matarrita from Harlem, the murals exuberantly celebrated the 100th anniversary of Gillespie’s birth. Exquisite late 19th century row houses between West 138th and 139th Streets became known as “Strivers’ Row” in the early 20th century when leaders in the Black community, upwardly-mobile professionals, intellectuals and artists lived there.</image:caption>

<image:caption>On June 30, volunteers for Big Apple Greeter were treated to a fabulous tour of Yankee Stadium, thanks to the Yankees Tour Department. Tours are offered both on days when a baseball game is being played and non-game days. There was no game the day we visited which made us feel even more special, like we had the whole stadium to ourselves!</image:caption>

<image:caption>We started with brunch at a Middle Eastern cafe, sharing a plate of dips and pita bread. Then we walked the 3 1/2-mile loop around Prospect Park. I'd planned to go to a Woody Guthrie concert that afternoon at the Old Stone House in Park Slope, and she was eager to join me. She even knew "This Land Is Your Land." The concert was very crowded, in fact it was standing room only. At one point, someone raised a hand and said, "You know, there's this virus going around -- can we open a window?" But the organizers said the windows in the old building were sealed shut.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Volunteering in New York: Showing Travelers NYC Off The Beaten Path</image:title>
<image:caption>A meeting with a Greeter, affectionately known as a Greet, is different from a tour with a professional New York tour guide. It’s intended to show New York City as only New Yorkers know it. Greeters act as “volunteer friends” and meet with no more than six people at a time. The model is so successful that it’s been replicated around the world and many Greeters and visitors stay in touch long after their Greet has ended. Growing up in New Jersey, Jesse didn’t fall in love with New York City until after college. Until then, he was unaware of the vast amount of culture, diversity and art there was to explore in the city that he previously visited just a handful of times. As a result, he is determined that people from near and far know about the wonders of New York City. He wants to make the case for the city to non-New Yorkers from around the world; to let travelers know that the city he loves is so much more than Times Square or other well-known places. He wants to convey a truth about New York City and the people who call it home and have others know the obscure, sometimes off the beaten path places that New Yorkers love. Volunteering as a Greeter provides a way for Jesse to do that, one visitor at a time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The pandemic hasn’t diminished Jesse’s commitment to sharing the wonders of the city, even if not in person. In May, Jesse and long-time Greeter Lester Barnett each created virtual Greets, a first for Big Apple Greeter. It’s a format that’s still being evaluated, but has the potential to become yet another way for the organization to raise awareness and enthusiasm about New York City.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How lucky are we to have our own Big Apple Greeter-Historian: the adventurous Tom Keating. A true sleuth, he explores different parts of the city with camera clicking…and we get to savor his slide show. Fifth Avenue has more famous buildings than any other street in the city. Tom started at Washington Square Arch in Washington Square Park in lower Manhattan. This marble triumphal arch was built in 1889 to celebrate the 1789 centennial of President George Washington’s inauguration. On to The New School built in 1919 at Fifth Avenue and West 12th Street. It was founded by university professors as a progressive, free school for adults. Today it is one of the city’s bastions of art and design, with 5 divisions including the Parsons School of Design, the Mannes School of Music, and the School of Drama.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What New Yorker isn’t proud of our iconic Empire State Building at 34th and Fifth Avenue? Built in 1931, this 102-story Art Deco skyscraper was the tallest building in the world for forty years. Today, it is only the 45th! As Tom headed uptown, we saw the original B. Altman Department Store, and Rockefeller Center, often called “The greatest urban complex of the 20th Century.” It includes 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres between 48th and 51st Streets. The largest single family home – with 128 rooms – was built by Cornelius Vanderbilt II in 1883, at 1 West 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. 43 years later, it was sold and demolished, and today the luxurious Bergdorf Goodman has taken its place. The procession of famous buildings continued as Tom walked farther: the Louis Vuitton store, The Plaza Hotel, and The Apple Store, known as the Glass Cube.</image:caption>

Tyrannosaurus rex: 47 feet long, weighing 6 or 7 tons, with a hole in their hip socket that helped them hunt faster. The teeth of T.REX were serrated like a steak knife, especially handy when tearing into your fellow dinosaurs. The crushing power of their jaws was between 8,000 and 12,000 pounds and when they broke a tooth, a replacement could show up in 35 days.</image:caption>

It is 40 inches across and 7 to 30 pounds. No sweet aroma though, it smells like rotten meat. The heaviest animal that ever lived? The Blue Whale, found in Antarctica in 1925, weighs 200 tons, and there are only 12,000 to 20,000 thousand Blue Whales alive today. The scariest species for elephants? Man… who kills them for their ivory tusks. As we left, we decided one word described what we had just seen: Superlative!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Historian Lloyd Ultan: Mad About The Bronx</image:title>
<image:caption>As we filled the Big Apple Greeter conference room, historian Lloyd Ultan took us to the Bronx through his exuberant words. He grew up and still lives there. He’s been the Bronx Historian since 1996, and the minute he started talking, you could tell the Bronx was the love of his life. Lloyd had so many interesting and funny anecdotes. For example, did you know the Bronx is the only borough attached to the North America – which means (he said snobbily) “We’re the only true Americans in the city!” The Bronx is 42 square miles, the same size as Paris and San Francisco. There are 1,400,000 residents who come from every continent, including the penguins at the Bronx Zoo who are from Antarctica. A little more than 50% of residents are Latino, 30% are black, and the rest are different ethnic groups: Koreans, Italians, Arabs and Israelis (who get along very well), Irish, Albanians, and European Jews, among others. The Bronx is welcoming to everyone. Lloyd told the story of a congregation of Jews who couldn’t afford the upkeep of their temple anymore, so an imam from a nearby mosque invited them to share his sanctuary.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Historian Lloyd Ultan: Mad About The Bronx</image:title>
<image:caption>The Bronx Zoo sits on 265 wooded acres and has more than 6000 exotic animals. It is the largest urban zoo in the world with habitats resembling life in the wild. Only a glass wall separates you from the animals. The New York Botanical Garden is America’s premiere urban garden. The 250-acre landscape supports over 1,000,000 living plants in 50 different gardens. There are tropical, temperate, and desert flora, a cascade waterfall, and a 50-acre original New York forest. <image:title>Blog - Historian Lloyd Ultan: Mad About The Bronx</image:title>
<image:caption>The current Yankee Stadium opened in 2009. If you take a tour, you can see the locker room, sit in the dugout, or visit the Yankee Museum. Near Yankee Stadium is Arthur Avenue. The avenue is filled with Italian restaurants offering true pasta – which is soft and made by hand. You can visit Mike’s deli where you’ll see a demonstration of how to make mozzarella. Then there’s the Grand Concourse, brainchild of Luis A. Riise, a French engineer. In the latter 19th century, he envisioned a grand highway (in the middle of rural countryside) and he modeled it after the Paris Champs Elyse. During the Great Depression, developers built apartment buildings in the Art Deco style. Today the Bronx has the largest collection of Art Deco lobbies in the world. After such an entertaining presentation, we all felt the same way: mad about the man, Lloyd Ultan. (Grand Concourse Art Deco lobby | Photo Credit: pinterest.com)</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Marino Marini: Master Sculptor of Female Nudes</image:title>
<image:caption>In a small, residential building at 421 Broome Street in Manhattan, we arrived at the fourth floor and were ushered into a large kitchen by four young Italian women who served us Italian coffee. This was the home of CIMA, Center for Italian Modern Art, “home” being the key word. We felt comfortable right away – where else are you offered coffee and cheerful conversation before a tour? Our passionate guide Claudia, who shared her vast knowledge, took us to through the gallery, a jewel- box space, both intimate and expansive. As we walked, Claudia shared Marino Marini’s history, a sculptor considered to have brought a new aesthetic to the very nature of sculpture. Marini (1901-1980) started out as a painter. At age 16, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He also learned drawing and woodcuts – all in the classical style. Then he discovered what he loved most: sculpture. At this point, he left Florence. He felt there were too many masterpieces everywhere he turned, and he wanted to find his OWN way through art. In 1929 he went to Milan and as Claudia showed us his work, she spoke so lovingly about each piece, it’s as if they were her children.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Marino Marini: Master Sculptor of Female Nudes - ( One of his Giovinetta series)</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1929 he went to Milan and as Claudia showed us his work, she spoke so lovingly about each piece, it’s as if they were her children. In 1939, Marini created Giovinetta (Young Lady) in bronze. Plump and voluptuous, in stark contrast to classically prefect bodies, he made cracks and imperfections along the surface, recognizing her humanity. Her arms are missing; this is Marini’s way of commenting on the brutality of World War II. Next, the imposing, muscular Pomona, 1945, named for the Roman goddess of fertility, gardens, fruits, and orchards. Walk behind Pomona, and you see she is hiding a piece of fruit in her hand. An inspired touch was the addition of paintings of female nudes. One was by Wilhelm de Kooning and another by Giacometti. But the hero of the day was Marino Marini, whose 30 female nudes had protruding bellies, sagging breasts, and even thick thighs. He had the ability to humanize them, while still showing their timeless beauty.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Social Justice is Alive, Well, and Beautiful – at The Ford Foundation Gallery</image:title>
<image:caption>When we approached the Ford Foundation at 320 East 43rd Street in Manhattan, we saw an imposing building set back from the street. Once inside, we were welcomed by the sweetest security guards and staff. Our guide was the Gallery’s Director, Lisa Kim, who was captivating as she shared the building’s history. In 1936, Henry Ford and his brother Edsel started the foundation as a charitable organization. The organization had a $25,000 endowment to support local arts in Michigan. By the time the brothers died in the 1940s, Henry Ford II was president, and the endowment was worth $450 million ($15 billion today!) In 1967, the foundation moved to Manhattan. Architects Kevin Roche and John Dinkeloo designed a soaring 14-story building of glass, granite and steel. There were 400 private offices looking down at a first-floor interior garden, with lush trees, vines and shrubs, lizards, crickets and a bat! Landscape architect Dan Kiley made this garden the first of its kind in the U.S. In 2016, President John Walker wanted to renovate, making the interior more modern, but keeping its historic sensibility. The renovation was completed in 2018, with added space for an art gallery. The gallery’s mission: To disrupt inequality in all its forms and to push for social change.</image:caption>

<image:caption>And what a neighborhood it is! You’ll find a neo-Georgian Post Office famous for a mural completed in 1940 by artist Peppino Mangravite. The mural was part of a Works Project Administration project. It depicts the transformation of Jackson Heights from cornfields to a Garden Community. Architecturally, it is also diverse. There are schools built in the Flemish Renaissance style, a church in modern Gothic style, and the elegant Chateau apartment complex built in the French Renaissance style. On Roosevelt Avenue from 74th to 108th Streets, you’ll find food trucks from all over the world dishing up delicacies such as Middle Eastern lamb over rice, Greek souvlaki, Ecuadorian ceviche, Mexican elotes (corn on a cob), homemade tamales filled with meats, cheese, or fruits, and fruit aguas frescas (smoothies). <image:title>Blog - Cheryl Fleisher Wins Everyday Hero Award From RSVP</image:title>
<image:caption>RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) is one of the largest volunteer networks in the nation for people 55 and over. Many Greeters and office volunteers are referred to Big Apple Greeter by RSVP, so when they asked us to nominate one of our volunteers for their Everyday Heroes award, we chose Cheryl Fleisher, who is the living definition of that term. Cheryl began volunteering for us in 2017 and immediately made a huge impact. She got us involved for the first time in on-line and peer-to-peer fundraising. She was the driving force behind our 2017 Giving Tuesday and Year-End campaigns, which doubled the amount of the previous year from $20,000 to $40,000. And she co-created our Inheritance Giving campaign. Only a year later, we already have 40 people signed up.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Cheryl Fleisher Wins Everyday Hero Award From RSVP</image:title>
<image:caption>So on September 20th, RSVP held a Recognition Breakfast honoring Cheryl and other New York winners. The breakfast theme was the 50th Anniversary of Woodstock. They titled the event: PEACE, LOVE AND SERVICE: Celebrating Our Groovy RSVP Volunteers. As the winners were announced, peace, love and harmony permeated the room. The celebration was held at Con Edison’s grand ballroom at 4 Irving Place. Con Edison graciously provided the food and the ballroom. There were about 20 tables in total, each with decorations such as multi-colored peace signs and tie-dyed napkins.</image:caption>
