The "new" Yankee Stadium Hits it Out of the Park

In 2009, the Bronx welcomed a new Yankee Stadium. Built to replace the original stadium built in 1923, the new stadium is situated one block north of the original. And, oh - what a beautiful place it is!

On June 30, volunteers for Big Apple Greeter were treated to a fabulous tour of Yankee Stadium, thanks to the Yankees Tour Department. Tours are offered both on days when a baseball game is being played and non-game days. There was no game the day we visited which made us feel even more special, like we had the whole stadium to ourselves!

With our knowledgeable and fun guide, James, we saw the baseball field being converted to host an American soccer game. (In the late autumn, the stadium also hosts the Pinstripe Bowl, an American college football game.)

We visited the Yankees Museum, viewing uniforms, bats and balls, trophies, and lots more, chronicling 100 years of Yankees sports history. A highlight of the museum is the Baseball Wall, encasing almost 900 autographed baseballs from each player, manager, coach, and broadcaster in Yankees history.

And we saw Monument Park, an open-air museum of monuments and plaques showcasing both Yankee history and historical events that took place in Yankee Stadium, like the 2008 mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI.

Greeter Eliot Wagner grew up near the original Yankee Stadium in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx. He declared the tour of the new Yankee Stadium a “home run!”

It’s easy and fun to tour Yankee Stadium, and there are several different tours to choose from. Click here to learn more. And it is easy to get to Yankee Stadium, too.
