Union Square Green Market
Broadway @ East 17th Street
Open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 8AM to 6PM
Union
Square Green Market is the granddaddy of all New York City’s farmers’
markets, showcasing wide varieties of fresh New York State seasonal
crops, since 1976.
The luscious fruits and
vegetables lure you into the Green Market area. Take time to stroll
from farm stand to farm stand. You will get to meet the farmers, ask
them about what they are selling and get tips on how to prepare it. In
fact, the farmers' appetizingly displayed stands draw you in to stop
and talk to them. When you do, look at their proudly displayed photos
of their farm and family members, and read their slogans. Many farmers
offer free samples of their fruit, vegetables and cider.
Here are some of the farm stands available at the Union Square Green Market:
- Twin Spruce Apiaries, Greene
County, NY, offers honey and candles. “We love working with bees in the
country and we love coming to the city and seeing people enjoy our
products,” said Walter & Nonie Bauer.
- Beth’s Farm Kitchen,
Stuyvesant Falls, NY, sells jellies, jams and chutneys, pickled beans,
and relishes. “We know you love our products, so we will keep on jamming if you keep spreading the word,” said Beth, Liz and the Jammers.
- Breezy Hill Orchard,
Staatsburg, Dutchess County, NY, grows heirloom orchard fruit to
produce apples, tomatoes, and cider. Owner Elizabeth Ryan’s sign tells
you of her NY State Cornell University degree in pomology, the
scientific study of fruit cultivation.
- Keith’s Farm,
Westtown, Orange County, NY, offers various onions, shallots, herbs,
lovage (a type of lettuce), and other veggies. Owner Keith Stewart is
the author of It’s A Long Road To A Tomato.
- Caradonna Farms, Marlborough, NY, has many apple varieties including Mitsu, Jonagold, Cameo, Idared, and Winesap.
- Lynnhaven Goat Milk Cheese,
Pine Bush, NY, proudly sells various goat cheeses and yoghurt. “I love
my goats. I cannot imagine doing anything else,” said over Lynn Fleming.
- Nine-Jay Nurseries,
Stuyvesant, Columbia County, NY, sells tomatoes, greens, and herbs. Its
sign proclaims, “Pride of New York: New York State Food and
Agricultural Products available here.” Free samples of their delicisous
tomatoes are often available.
- Windy Maple Farms,
Middletown, Orange County, NY, sells vegetables and Christmas trees in
season. “I can’t NOT farm; it’s in my blood,” said owner Don Keller.
In
addition to the many farm stands, you will also find information booths
offering brochures, recipes, and food preparation demonstrations, such
as how to make sauerkraut.
