Brilliant! Inspired by the success of Big Apple Greeters, I hope to set up a similar program in Brussels, Belgium

Awesome!

It's great to read all the nice comments and to know we make a difference in people's lives - both the visitors and the volunteers. Particularly around the Holidays it's great to do things for others. Lynn

I have been a Big Apple Greeter since October of 2007, and I find it very rewarding! It is wonderful to meet people from all over the world. I enjoy showing my city to visitors, and making them feel at home. I love meeting people from different cultures and nations, and there is always a lot to learn from them. It is a mutually beneficial experience, not just for the visitor, but also for the Greeter. The exchange of ideas and customs only leads to better communication and understanding amongst people. Who knows...it could lead to world peace!

Lynn Brooks | Posted: 24 November 2009
I'm thrilled to read the comments from Greeters who enjoy showing the City I love to visitors. It's great to know that the visitors learn a whole lot and, once they go our with a Greeter they are comfortable negotiating the City on their own. They visit neighborhoods they might never have known about as well as seeing all the many iconic New York sights and attractions.  Lynn

We booked a tour last March and our Apple Greeter Naomi took extra effort in making sure she could tell us all about the tour we had requested; a tour downtown passed the footprints of the early Dutch settlers. She had read especially read the book that we mentioned in our request and showed and told us a lot of things we would have never seen or known had we followed it up ourselves. And the next day we met her and her husband Mike and had another special private tour in their neighbourhood. Again, we entered places we would have walked by had we been on our own! It is something we look back upon with great pleasure and which we now recommend to everybody we hear is going to New York; try to get an Apple Greeter! A non commercial, honest and solid organisation that deserves all the help it can get to give tourists the possibility to see and hear about the true New York!

I read the annoucement of the formation of a new organization to share your love of your neighborhood with visitors to NYC. My wife and I went to the initial meeting. For about 6 years we escorted many people--some of whom still keep in touch and even visit us. I did work in the office also.  George Himes

Really enjoyed our Big Apple Greeter experience in Greenwich Village New York last year !

Sandy Shapiro | Posted: 20 November 2009
We so enjoyed our Big Apple Greeter experience this year. We met our Paris greeter, a lovely gentlemen, who shared his former neighborhood with us. There are many guidebooks but this tour truly gave us a peek at back alleys and little shops that enchanted us. A lovely day and a marvelous organization.

Big Apple Greeter is one of the finest organizations in NYC and is an incredible asset to the tourism industry. Big Apple Greeters, all highly qualified volunteers, communicate their own experiences and expertise to domestic and foreign tourists, making their visits to NYC truly extraordinary.

Rose Marie Himes | Posted: 19 November 2009
My husband and I were among the very first Big Apple Greeters. Later we volunteered in the office. I have seen the long lasting positive effects of the organization on individuals and the city.

I am a former Big Apple Greeter. I met so many visitors from all over the world. They were so impressed that there were people in NYC that were willing to share their piece of NY with them. It was an experience that I will never forget.  A very warm hug and thanks to Lynn Brooks,Alicia Pierro and the whole crew who I had the pleasure to have met. I love you all.

Having never been to New York before, Big Apple Greeters were recommended to us as the way to go. We met our greeter at 9.15am and he was a very kind and knowledgeable gentleman who was very eager to show his beautiful city to strangers. We spent a lovely morning wandering around beautiful buildings in mid-town and getting a good feel of New York. A fantastic service.

Having used the services of BAG twice on visits to New York I can say that I have found them professional, courteous, and most importantly passionate about their city. A trip to New York would not be the same without BAG and they are great ambassadors. I have recommended them to anyone who will listen !

Lynn Brooks | Posted: 19 November 2009
I'm the founder of Big Apple Greeter and it's so great to read everyone's comments. I'm so Happy that our volunteers make such a difference. This morning I happened to meet visitors from Denmark who told me that before coming to New York their friends told them not to go because it would be scary. However, because of Big Apple Greeter they came and plan to come again!!! They will also tell their friends to come. What better way to help New York City in these difficult economic times. Thank you visitors for coming and thank you volunteers for all you do! Thank you New York City for being such a great place. I'm blessed to live here.  Lynn

I was in NY in 2006 (end of year) with my family. Chuck from big Apple Greeter showed us around and it was really a great day. Whenever I come back to NY on vacation to use a big apple greeter is a must. By the way: I was in Chicago last year and had someone from chicago greeter, which I thought to be similar to Big apple Greeter - no way, Big Apple Greeter is just unique - especially Chuck who was a perfect guide! THANK YOU!

The Big Apple Greeters gave me a warm welcome the two times I asked them to show me their city. They made me discover aspects of New York City I would never have known about without their help. I always recommend them when a friend plans to travel to New York. Thank you so much.

Danke!

Mary Hammond | Posted: 18 November 2009
This is a wonderful organization. I have experienced it twice and both times the people who showed my family around New York were warm and wonderful. Keep up the great work for a great city.

Big Apple Greeter is a wonderful organization the provides the individual attention that many people welcome when visiting and traveling around New York. The knowledge and professionalism of the greeters are is a very positive addition to the overall experience.

Our Big Apple Greeter made our visit to NYC special. She was very knowledgeable about her city and its history. We spent a delightful time strolling around SOHO, discovering wonderful stores, and places to eat. We ended our tour in Chinatown eating delicious dumplings. Thanks to Big Apple Greeters we visited parts of NYC that we probably would not of otherwise seen and we saw them throught the eyes of a local. Joanne, Sydney Australia

The Big Apple Greeter service is a terrific concept and a fantastic way of introducing visitors to a city.   We felt very priviledged to be "awarded" a Greeter who was absolutely delightful, brimful of knowledge and passionate about his local community.   Had it not been for him, we would never have found our way to Prospect Park, the local markets and nor would we have been invited to a "Block Party" where we enjoyed meeting new people and having our first "real" NYC hotdog. What joy!!   Thank you so much - a wonderful day filled with memories that will last well beyond our first visit to NYC.

My Big Apple Greeter showed me to lower East Side and we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. I had the most wonderful time visiting at places I had heard of and hearing stories about it. We took the subway to Brooklyn and walked back across the bridge. Fabulous! Having a local person walk with you is so much better than on a coach trip as they personalise the stories.   I have told all of my freinds and family in Australia to use your service. Thank you very much.

cat hopkinson | Posted: 18 November 2009
In 2008 a Big apple greeter showed me around the east side, an area he had grown up, he entertained us with stories of how the area had changed over the years and showed us how to use the subway. We saw a side of the city we never would have seen without this service. Long may it continue!

Nelram Puruer | Posted: 18 November 2009
My BigApple Greeter showed me several hidden spots and told me stories that are not in the guidebooks. I really appreaciated this very special day with him and I am sure that the tour pretty much influenced my picture of the city.

Stuart Sepple | Posted: 17 November 2009
My family visited New York last Christmas and the the Greeter Service was absolutely fantastic. The First day, which we spent with a Greeter Volunteer had a profound effect on the rest of our visit, giving us the confidence to explore the City in a way we would never done without her guidance. Since our return we have recommended the service to a number of friends and to one of our relatives who were equally impressed. No other city we have visited in the world has any thing like it, to our knowledge. One friend we recommended was unsure of whether to take his Holiday in New York or visit a "safer" more familiar City in Europe and our enthusiasm for the Greeter persuaded him to overcome his trepidation and go for NY. I can honestly say this is the best "Freebee" I have ever encountered - and with no strings attached - a real surprise from a country considered the centre of commercialism and "Making a Quick Buck".

Last October 2008 I visited NY with a couple friends. Although I had been to NY a few times before, it still was fantastic having that time with our Greeter. She was a wonderful, accomodating lady who kept our interest the whole time. It was a very enjoyable, interesting and an easy-going experience. Invaluable! Thank you so much! Christel with love from Rugby, England.

My family of four (children 11 and 15) got to experience Coney Island and more in July 2009 thanks to our well versed guide, Beth Harpez. She met us at our Upper West Side hotel & took us all the way down to Coney Island. She was great to talk with & filled us with information on our subway journey. She pointed out special places of history and interest and patiently allowed us to play in the ocean and challenge the Cyclone. She then continued our adventure as we got on the elevated to visit DUMBO - sharing an excellent chocolatier/ice cream shop with us as we walked to the "ferry landing" which provided a great view of Manhattan. We wanted to walk across the Brooklyn bridge and Beth walked us all the way to the entrance. We felt like we had spent the afternoon with an old friend! It was a great day and we appreciated New York so much more, thanks to our personal New York Greeter. This is an outstanding program and we were so happy to have been chosen to participate!

christiane RIGAULT | Posted: 7 November 2009
Unfortunately, in january 2009, it was a snowy and rainy day, very cold, but Helen, our greeter, very friendly, took us to the subway and said a lot about NYC and we had a good day of shopping and chatting! Good memories.

G'day to Big Apple Greeter (BAG) and our wonderful guide, Joan Briller.   We had a brilliant day looking around Broadway and Time Square. Joan was so natural, welcoming, and friendly, and we felt as though we had known her all our lives.   We have recommended Big Apple Greeter to many people since returning home. If ever we have the good fortune to NYC again, we will certainly be contacting Big Apple Greeter.   Wendy & John  Brisbane, Australia

My mother and I had a Big Apple Greeter in September of 2002 for the one year anniversary of 9/11. Our greeter was great, he was very passionate about sharing his love and knowledge of New York. It was both of our first trips to NYC and the Big Apple Greeter was the best thing we could have done to get a first hand look at the city through a local's eyes. They are highly recommended for any first time traveler to NYC or for any repeat visitors who wants the inside info that only locals know from living there. I fell in love with NYC and have since made repeat trips and I think it was in part due to our Greeter. I have recommended them to everyone I know who said they were thinking about going to NYC and all of them who have gone couldn't thank me enough for recommending them; they all said it was the highlight of their trip.  Thanks Big Apple Greeter for a wonderful trip that I will never forget!!!  Love, Wendy from New Orleans!

My husband and I had a Big Apple Greeter in August of this year and he was terrific and showed us many places we would never have found on our own. If we come to New York again in the future, you can be sure we will request a Big Apple Greeter. Diane Davies

The Big Apple Greeter concept should be adopted by many larger cities. When I first visited New York I was nervous about riding the subways, walking down side streets and going into areas that I had "heard" about. Our Big Apple Greeter took away all of those fears and I visited New York this past summer again with new eyes. We rented an apartment and walked EVERYWHERE! We saw so much and learned so much more than we would have if we had cabbed everywhere. My next visit is in the near future and I will have a Big Apple Greeter show me more of my new favourite city. This service is amazing and the Big Apple Greeters that show off New York truly love their home town. Keep up the good work. See you soon! L. Kozuska

Big Apple Tours made a big difference to our trip - the guide was so helpful, friendly and showed us how to use the subway to get around. We saw places we would never have thought of to visit includng an ornate ceiling in a banking building - wonderful!!! A fantastic service, so much so that we used a similar set up in San Francisco a couple of years later. :)

Big Apple Greeter is a wonderful idea and thank's to all the volunteers, you don't only visit this great city, but you also share a great human moment. And in the critical times we go through all around the world, it just makes you happier. Thank you so much... And good luck!  Guillaume (France)

I stumbled across the Big Apple Greeters program back in 1995 and used this tremendous service as in introduction to NYC. We used them again without hesitation in 2001. This is such a simple yet effective concept for tourist promotion. Spending time with a well-informed and passionate New Yorker was fabulous. What wonderful guides they were! I have since promoted this service to anyone I know planning a trip to NYC. It would be a terrible shame if this service was unable to continue. I hope you win!  Susan (Mid North Coast NSW - Australia)

A friend and myself had a wonderful walking tour of Brooklyn with a knowledgeable and friendly Big Apple guide. I would definitely recommend that anyone interested in learning through walking and talking to someone versed in a specific area; the best way to learnabout and understand the marvellous city of New York. She even came to meet us and take us via subway to our destination. Highly recommended.

My husband and I took our teenage daughter and her boyfriend to NYC in August 09. We had a wonderful Big Apple Tour of Greenwich Village and Soho. Our guide also gave us lessons on using the subway. It really is easy once you understand. I'm actually heading up to NYC this coming weekend with my daughter and two neices. The subway will save on cabs.

We first met our greeter, Linda Jawitz, in April 2006, our first visit to NY. She was fantastic, and enhanced our visit so much, with her knowledge, her warmth and her charm. My eldest daughter booked her for her honeymoon visit in 2007 and had a similar experience. My wife, youngest daughter and I are coming again in 2010 and have already asked for Linda again. Can you have a better recommendation? Thanks everyone.

This is a wonderful program! I used it with my family's first visit a few years back. The greeter was spectacular and one I would never forget. It made my trip to new York unforgettable. Knowing how to get around NY proved priceless. And the background info and first hand knowledge gave me a different perspective. No longer did I feel like a "tourist". I can't thank you guys enough.

We visited the Big Apple in April 2009 with the help of a "Big Apple Greeter". It was very great. Our greeter (Rena) was fantastic and very kind.  A few days after returning in France, we meet a New Yorker in France and we were very happy to receive him at home for a visit of our town (Rouen in Normandy). So that we were be able to give to a New Yorker what another New Yorker gave to us: a little of our time for the pleasure of welcoming a New Yorker.  Big Apple Greeter is something very generous and useful for visitors of all the world.  Warmest regards  Pierre Caquelard

Big Apple Greeter promotes local businesses that tourist may not otherwise know about. They have the inside scoop on where "real" New Yorkers eat and shop. They also help familiarize people with the city and provide a service that no other tour provider can match and they do it all for FREE! A super organization and one very worthy of winning.

What a wonderful introduction to the great city of New York! Our Big Apple Greeter David Baldacci was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his city he made our visit very special by introducing us to places we would have missed had he not shown us them. I can't say enough about value and worth of the organisation. What great PR for the city and all unofficial!   Lynn A.  London

Big Apple Greeter is a fantastic program. We have been in New York twice on vacation and have found both occassions the information and fantastic people who are volunteers for Big apple Greeter are welcoming and provide a welath of knowledge and invaluable service to holiday makers and people who are not familiar with New York. It is a great selling point for New York. I have personally recommeded this service to other friends who will be or have visited New York. Keep up the great work!

We learned so much about New York on our first visit that many frequent visitors don't know. Our Greeter took the time to show us out-of-the-way art installations and other sites he thought would interest us based on our conversation.  Totally deserving cause!!!

I first used Big Apple Greeters, when I visited NY with my husband for 10 days in 02, had a fabulous time in the rain. I then returned in Jan 07 with my mum, her first visit to usa, had another greeter, what a great idea, went to places we would not hav gone on our own. Manged to see so of the fab places in new york that most tourists miss, thank you for the great service and welcome that you greeter bring to visitors.   I have recommended you to all my family and friends who visit New York, my favourite city!!   Jacki CZ England

My mother and I travelled to NYC in March '09. It was her first time and my fourth so I decided to do something special and signed up with Big Apple Greeters. We were lucky enough to be matched with our greeter, Lester, who provided us with my favorite memory out of all my trips to NYC. His love for his city is apparent and we were introduced to many wonderful, hidden "gems" during our afternoon with him. Thank you BAG for providing this wonderful service and to all the greeters who volunteer their time .. it is greatly appreciated!

Big apple greater is just what we needed when we came from France to visit New York for the second time. We had already seen the most touristic places, and we wanted to find some help to see more.   Tim took us from our hostel in the upper west side to Brooklyn. This Sunday afternoon was one of our best experience in NYC.   We wanna thank Tim and big apple greater for this wonderfull moments.

We have recommended big apple greeters to all our friends and the family.

Big Apple Greeter is an amazing charity and organisation.   We spent time with a Big Apple Greeter during our stay and it was one of the most amazing experiences.   The service is so giving and doesn't ask for anything in return from the visitors. It does however give all visitors to New York and the US an amazing experience of spending time with someone who is proud to be an American and a New Yorker.   It's an outstanding service and is one of the most amazing organisations.   We can still recall every moment of our visit to New York. Especially the time with our Big Apple Greeter.   This organisation deserves this reward and in our opinion would be a worthy and proud winner.

Wow! What can I say?? Chafin took us all over Harlem, downtown Manhatten and to Brooklyn. We saw the real NY and really experienced the "Big Apple." Coming from small- town NC, it was awesome to navigate public transit and feel at home in the city. My children learned so much. We've been back twice since our original trip 2 years ago and are NYC fans for life: it's always our vacation of choice because of Big Apple Greeters!

I came from Paris to New York with 4 French friends in November 2008 and, although I wasn't able to join them, I had organised for them an introductory tour with an extremely aimiable and knowledgement Big Apple Greeter (sorry, bit I don't remember his name). It was a wonderful way to get to know mid-Manhattan (where we were staying) and my friends thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have often referred to it afterwards as being one of the highlights of our trip. Many thanks and keep up the good work !!

Big apple greeter, what can i say, an absolute joy and superb service for young and old alike. No matter where you are from in the world, by the end of your time with a B.A.G, youn feel like an honorary New Yorker. I have used them on numerous visits to NYC and recommend them to all my family and friends. Do this wonderful service justice and keep on using them. Keep up the greatr work.

Janmari Jones - Big Apple Greeters is the best thing since GRITS, that is Girls Raised In The South. Several years ago I decided to visit New York City and bring along two of my elderly aunts. Before leaving home I arranged through Big Apple Greeters for one of their volunteer guides. Absolutely the best decision I made. Our greeter was Bernie and from the moment we met at our hotel I knew we were in good hands. He was so patient with us. Bernie taught us how to obtain a subway pass and how to get around on the subway as well as the buses. He took us to the neighborhoods we wanted to see, pointed out all points of interest, gave us insider info on the eateries and things to do. He was simply the best and without him our trip would not have been as successful. As my grandson would say, Bernie and the Big Apple Greeters are the bomb. Bless Big Apple Greeters.

Janet Mills | Posted: 3 November 2009
Myself and two friends were lucky to have experienced the service of a Big Apple Greeter during our short break to New York in May 2003. Our Greeter (sorry forgotten his name but he was an ex - teacher , which made the experience even more interesting as we are all teaching assistants and we discussed the American education system over a lovely lunch in an excellent restaurant in Little Italy which we would never have found without him) enthusiasticlaly showed us areas we would never have visited on our own and ride the subway - even providing us with free day passes! I have recomended the service to friends and colleagues some of which have been disappointed that a greeter was not available during their stay - so there must still be a genuine need for this excellent and free service.

Fantastic Service, we had an adventure with our B.A.G. - Sy. Weather be darned, it was raining, and cold but we put on our raincoats and away we went. It made our visit to New York all the better. I know for certain we would have never gotten to see Little Italy or China Town if it hadn't been for Sy, and those dumplings "yum". What an amazing gift, to meet someone willing to share, their time, a part of their life and community with absolute strangers. Fabulous organization ~ any grants and donations to this organization are greatly deserved and well earned by all the volunteers. Thanks to Sy for all the time spent with us on Sept. 11, 2009.

In 2000, we had the pleasure of meeting a Big Apple Greeter. She gave us a wonderful tip about the World Trade Center and we visited it.   We all know what happened in 2001... Our hearts went out to all of those lost in that disaster.   But we thoroughly enjoyed our tour in 2000, before our innocence was taken away.

In July 2009 "Big Apple Greeter" turned our vacation into something awesome. We had never visited New York before but the welcome and effort made by this organization gave us an insight into New York that otherwise would never have been possible.  The modus operandi of the Apple Greeters can only increase tourism to New York and give people a stay that they will never forget.  After what they did for us I feel I must say how brillaint they are.  Steve & Rosemary Heywood (UK)

Faye Sundholmf | Posted: 3 November 2009
We really appreciated our Big Apple Greeter. He showed us how to use a bus, subway and water taxi. The only thing that we had trouble with after that was getting a taxi at the port authority terminal. We were ripped off by someone we thought was helping us, but have learned a valuable lesson from that. Having a big apple greeter gave us greater confidence in navigating around New York and he showed us around his neighbor hood and we saw things that an ordinary tourist would never see. Such as the house that Irving Berlin lived in for the last forty years of his life. Thank you so much to big apple greeter.

The team of Big Apple Greeters are a real credit to the great city of New York. We have used the service on two occasions and been provided with personal highlights of Brooklyn and Harlem that my partner and I would not have experienced on our own. Both Greeters, an ex-detective and a college lecturer, were obviously proud of their city and they made sure that we, as visitors, got the most out of our time with them. We always make sure that friends heading to New York are made aware of this invaluable and free service. Other cities would do well to replicate the Greeter service.

Trudy Berry | Posted: 3 November 2009
Big Apple Greeters was the best thing about my 12 day New York City trip! Our greeter was absolutely perfect, making us feel safe and comfortable in NYC! We saw and did more in one day than we ever could have done without our greeter. He helped us understand the subway system, and other things that we were afraid to do on our own. Big Apple Greeters is such a valuable service to tourists like myself, who feel like they would have been quite overwhelmed in such a huge city. Big Apple Greeters allows NYC visitors to put a face with a city, giving it a personal touch, and in turn that helps everyone involved! NYC has had a bad reputation for many years: unfriendly, dangerous, unsafe, people won't look at you, no one will help, etc . After my visit to NYC, I found out that all those things are false, and I feel that Big Apple Greeters is helping to change that negative reputation into a positive one! I love NYC, and I love Big Apple Greeters!

Our compliments to our Big Apple Greeter John. We visit New York in May 2008.  On the day of our appointment it was raining and John suggested to object the appointment to the next day because the weather forecasts for the next day was good. On that day, saterday actually the day of shopping with his wife, he showed us the bigapple, see in a way we ourselves would not have looked. We had asked foor Greenwich, Chinatown. We have seen a lot of this areas. Many of these areas we would not have detected by ourselfs, but due to our Apple Greeter we have seen verry much. Also he let us taste, for us, things we have never seen and eaten. That was also a very nice experience.  It was a very, very kindly man and we loved the way he showed us New York through his eyes.  So we hope that a lot of people can enjoy New York with a Big Apple Greeter,  It gifs the visit of New York just something more.   Ineke van Laar, the Netherlands

Yes, Big Apple Greeter deserves to win this contest. My daughter and I visited New York in march 2007 and on our second day , my daughters birthday, we walked with a Greeter through Central Park and surroundings. He showed us some marvelous art-items on and in buildings, we would never have seen without him. We had lunch in his favourite Chinese restaurant, we had coffee in the Central Park Zoo. And he told us how it is to live in this big city. He really made us feel at home. And we looked the following days with different eyes. Yes, New York Greeter is a great idea, because real New Yorkers welcome guests from abroad with a free gift: there love for the city and there spare time...  Wilma van Hoeven, the Netherlands.

I was introduced to New York by a wonderful Big Apple Greeter and it made the world of difference. We got wonderful tips and local information because we were offered the opportunity to spent time with someone who knew the community we were visiting. It was a unique privilage. New Yorkers should be very proud that their community members are so willing to give of their time and knowledge to strangers visiting your beautiful city. I hope you do well and win this... It was an honour for me to vote for such a wonderful community spirit in such a huge metropolitian city. Well done to all Big apple Greeters, you demonstrate generosity to the core!

I was visiting New York as a special treat for my 60th birthday. It was my first visit to New York and we had come all the way from New Zealand. Our Greeter "Bob" met us on our first day and introduced us to this wonderful city. Showed us how to use the subway. Took us on a 5hr tour /orientation of New York. He was friendly, informative and just a very nice man. What a great service the "greeters'" provide. We fell in love with New York - 8 days was not enough. Can't wait to come back.

Thank you Big Apple Greeter, and thank you Chafin.  Patrick & Sagri Naiker, Cape Town. South Africa

This is a truly amazing program and my mom and I enjoyed the way we were greeted and thus welcomed to New York City and its different local communities.

We used Big apple Greeter on our first family vacation to NYU in 2008 and coming from a rather small (7,000) Midwestern town, our greeter reaaly helped us feel comfortable in the city. Esp helpful to me was the information he gave us about using the subway system (if we had known about the subway upon our arrival, we could have saved ourselves a 15 block walk dragging our suitcases behind us, as a subway station was located in the next block up from our hotel). He also introduced us to a hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant we never would have dared venture into on our own - and would have missed one of the most delicious meals of our stay! Thanks for everything, Big Apple Greeter. Due to the postive experience, we are planning a return trip to NYC next year.

Big Apple Greeter was the best experience I could have, coming to NY for the first time in May 2009. Me and my husband got a perfect start with a terrific host. I will absolutely use B.A.G again if I ever get to come to NY again and I'm telling the ones about to go to NY about it. Wishing there were more organisations like yours.

I really enjoyed my time with my Big Apple Greeter. I was shown how to use the Subway, visited areas I would not have seen otherwise and got to talk to a "local" rather than a Tourist Guide.

Had a blast with a couple that took me to some favorite haunts of theirs.. we had lunch, hiked a couple bridges, and i got some great pics as well... The service is just such a great and simple idea, we should definitely support it. No brainer!

This is the best idea ever - my husband and I used the program when we visited New York last year. I can't believe they offer this to visitors for free. We would have been more than willing to pay for what we received - Washington Heights is not an area we would have ever gone to on our own. And the history we learned was fantastic! Our tour guide was amazing and spent more time with us than was required. We will definitely use the program again when we come back to visit. Highly recommend it to anyone visiting NYC that wants to get off the normal tourist track! Thanks New York Greeters!!!

We LOVE to use the Big Apple Greeter program when we are visiting NYC. Our guests that we have taken with us just can't believe there's no charge. More importantly, there's nothing like a "local" to show you the real flavor of a city. Thanks Big Apple Greeters!

Apple Greeter was very helpful when I visited NY and this program deserves funding as it really is good. I would like to see a program like this come to San Francisco as well.

Many thanks to our greeter Bob who showed me and my family many parts of Manhatten that I could never have found in a guide book. Wonderful views, quaint parks and much, much more. Bob was so personable, relaxed and obviously loved his city. I highly recommend this program to anyone I hear is going to visit NYC.

Through Big Apple Greeter, we got an insider's look at Little Italy in the Bronx. Our tour guides took us around in a downpour and showed us a great Italian Market in the "old neighborhood." We loved the experience and recommend Big Apple Greeter to everyone we know that is visiting New York. Definitely a great way to get out of the tourist traps!   Jennifer DiBenedetto  Cincinnati, OH

Even though I am originally from NYC, I decided to schedule a walking tour of lower manhattan with some cousins that had come down from various parts of the country. Jim, our tour guide not only taught them a thing or two about lower manhattan but me as well! The tour was informative, funny, and flat out fantastic. The big apple tour greeters provide a valuable service to the community by celebrating the diversity and rich history that the greatest city in the world offers!

The Big Apple Greeters are in my opinion New Yorks biggest and best kept secret. If it gets others talking half as much as myself and my two teenage daughters did on our return to the UK then you really do have something special. My experience of our Big Apple Greeter was a true gentlman and Ambassador for your city. Out of our four days in New York, the day with the Big Apple Greeter is the most memorable. We will be back all thanks to Dan for making us feel so very welcome.

Brilliant organisation. A must for first time visitors to NewYork. On our first visit to the Big Apple in October last year, Saul gave us a a well informed tour of places we probably would never have found on our own. My daughter and I were in NYC in 2006 and had the opportunity to get a tour from Big Apple Greeter. I can't remember the name of the gentlemen but he took us all around Harlem and was so knowledgeable. I also appreciated his kindness since I was recovering from surgery and he wanted to make certain he wasn't walking me too much. We had a lovely day out with our Big Apple Greeter, Eleanour Gasnett. She was wonderful with my autistic son too. Previously I thought American people were generally very rude. I now realise there are exceptions! We had gone to attend a programme at the Autism Treatment Center of America. However, I still cannot forgive the visa officer who denied a visa to my sister in law so that she could give us a hand. "If your sister's son is autistic why would you want to help him?" he bellowed before he had her thrown out by a band of thugs, unaware that she had dedicated her whole life to helping him and vowed not to marry until he was better. I think the BAGs have some way to go before they can totally eradicate most people's poor image of Americans and this grant would help! Wow! I've found a way to vote and have a gripe about certain Americans!

My husband is a full time wheelchair user and we were lucky enough to be able to travel by ship to New York from the UK at the beginning of the year. It is not the easiest of cities to negotiate with a wheelchair so we were so grateful to The Big Apple Greeters for the wonderful service they gave us. My husband was taken ill on the return journey to the UK and will never be able to visit New York again but he will always have the memories of a day in dark and snowy January in Manhattan lit up by the unique service offered by Julie, our own Big Apple Greeter and the excellent and efficient service that backs her. New York should be proud of these unsung heroes who brighten people's lives. We recommended the service to friends visiting New York for a few days who said it was the best day they had of their entire holiday.

He was great with the kids and he answered all of their questions..even when it had nothing to do with what we were doing. Since we did the tour when we arrived in the city, he really helped us orient ourselves for our week long trip in the Big Apple. It is a great idea for a big city. We highly recommend it!  nikki

Big Apple Greeter is a great idea I wish I'll be able to test soon when I visit  New York!

The Big Apple Greeter is a fantastic way to make a big city seem like lots of little small towns. It's like visiting a friend you've yet to meet!

We love Big Apple Greeter which is now an amazing international network bringing people together all over the world !

Big Apple Greeters are a great idea. We enjoyed our time with greeter Richard who was a mine of information for all we needed to get around and see everything in NY with limited time frames.

NYC is a big scarey place for visitors. A Big Apple Greeter humanises the city, helps the visitor get the lay of the land and gives them the confidence to get to know the city far better.

I've had the opportunity to meet with a Big Apple Greeter on two occasions. Each time was a wonderful experience...far better than if I had done it alone! Imagine all the visitors we get in NYC...we want people coming back and speaking well of us...Big Apple Greeters make that happen!

Big Apple Greeter is not only good for visitors to the city, to the neighborhoods they visit and bring revenue, but most important establishes relationships that encourage more and more visitors to the city again and again.

Marian Goodside | Posted: 16 October 2009
We greeters show the best of New York. -people, places and the street scene.

Sandra Driesen | Posted: 16 October 2009
Being a Big Apple Greeter is so rewarding -- for the visitor, for me, and for New York City. The visitors feel comfortable getting to know the city with a personal "friend." I love showing off different neighborhoods that visitors would probably never see on their own. It's so much fun sharing the city that I love with people from all over the world -- and they love it, as well.

We are very enthusiastic about the Big Apple Greeter program - it left us with a very positive memory of your great city and its people. We have recommended the Big Apple Greeter to many friends who have visited wiht you.

Big Apple Greeters make NY the friendly place for all visitors. I know several people who've come to NYC and had the best time because someone who knew the city was at their side. What a wonderful service. Keep it going.

I'm a Big Apple Greeter enthusiast and I promote them every chance I get. When a visitor returns to their home base, they have great memories of a great city and its people. When visitors use a tour service, they still have great memories but the personal touch is missing and that's what they remember time and time again. Free Friendship! You go BAGers!

If you've ever been to a large unfamiliar city you must know how tough it is to find out where it is safe and fun to go to, where to eat and the best way to get around. I have been a Greeter since it first began and every visitor I've taken around the city has told me they have totally changed their original attitude about NYC. They thought New York City was uncaring and full of crime but after their visit realized that NYC is the greatest, friendliest and safest city in the world. I've even been told by a visitor that she hated Americans until she came to NYC and spent time with me and also encountered many helpful and friendly people. We welcome visitors with a warm and friendly experience that they would rarely find anywhere else. Please help us keep up the good work. Thanks.

Keep the Big Apple Greeter's group going. Promote all the good about New York City including the people who help to keep this great city as wonderful and open as it is.

Using Big Apple Greeter is like having a friend in NYC before you had a friend in NYC. I've been a Greeter since 1996 and I've made many friends within the United States and around the world. I love being a Greeter and sharing my love for NYC with visitors!

David Lesser | Posted: 15 October 2009
Visitors ask why I give up my time to be a greeter. I tell them that there is something new to see in the city every day and that I enjoy showing them the city as much as they enjoy being shown around the city.

Cindy Riley | Posted: 15 October 2009

BIG APPLE GREETER IS GOOD FOR NEW YORK CITY

City of New York, Mayor Michael Bloomberg

“[Big Apple Greeter’s] commitment to welcoming our City’s many visitors and helping them discover our outstanding cultural and social offerings and dynamic neighborhoods are commendable…”

Director of the New York City Department of City Planning, Chair of the City Planning Commission Amanda M. Burden

“The Greeter program brings international attention to the building blocks of our thriving city - our neighborhoods- not just Midtown Manhattan- but Astoria, Arthur Avenue, DUMBO, Snug Harbor. All across the five boroughs, Big Apple Greeter is showing… visitors the New York that isn't all skyscrapers; it's a real place that real people live and work in, which enhances New York’s perception throughout the country and the world, helping us keep our reputation not just as the global capital but as a livable city.”

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz

“Big Apple Greeter is the ultimate New York City tourism matchmaker, pairing up adventurous visitors with knowledgeable Brooklynites and New Yorkers who are proud to showcase our city’s neighborhoods, from the historic to the traditional to the trendy. We are very appreciative of the enthusiasm and expertise they offer our Brooklyn Tourism office.”

New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn

"New York City is the top destination in the world - and Big Apple Greeter plays a valuable role in welcoming visitors to our great City.   We appreciate the work they do to help out of towners explore our communities, eat at our restaurants and experience our City's vibrancy and diversity.”

Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer

“Big Apple Greeter lays out the welcome mat every day to showcase our city's unique neighborhoods, unparalleled diversity and second-to-none cultural institutions for the entire world to see.  Everyone knows how important tourism is to our city and its economy.  And everyone should know that Big Apple Greeter is a program that is a tremendous boost to both.”

BIG APPLE GREETER IS GOOD FOR BUSINESS

The Durst Organization, President Douglas Durst

“…As a tourist, nothing beats a New Yorker’s perspective on our City. Attracting visitors to New York is good for the City's economy and burnishes our reputation as not just an exciting tourist destination, but as the center of global commerce, media and technology.”

FOX5 and NY9, Vice President & General Manager Lew Leone

“Big Apple Greeter represents the very best that New York has to offer. New York City is number one by many measures and Big Apple Greeter helps assure that our visitors receive an experience second to none. The Greeters help spread the good news and positive aspects of our city and we can all use more good news.”

Tiffany & Co., Group Vice President, The Americas East Wendy Eagan

“The Big Apple Greeter organization assists tourists in getting around New York, and does so with the help of one of the things tourists are most curious about: New Yorkers. Visiting the city’s fabled landmarks and neighborhoods with volunteer greeters gives tourists a personal connection to the city and adds to an overall positive experience of New York that will remain with them long after they have returned home.”

WCBS-TV President and General Manager Peter Dunn

"WCBS-TV is proud to support all the great work Big Apple Greeter does for visitors of New York City. The volunteer greeters do a remarkable job of welcoming visitors to the diverse neighborhoods as well as providing them with the knowledge and tools to experience what this amazing city has to offer."
