Welcome to the Access Program for Travelers with Disabilities
Big Apple Greeter launched
its Access Program in 1993 to inform travelers with disabilities of
some accessible travel options within New York City, as well as help
travelers with disabilities to get the most from their visit by
matching them with a volunteer greeter who will show them a favorite
section of the city. Our organization is proud to provide volunteer
opportunities for New Yorkers with disabilities that have first-hand
knowledge of the ins-and-outs of accessible options within New York
City.
To date, Big Apple Greeter
has welcomed several thousand visitors with disabilities, along with
their travel companions. Click here for our Access Reference Guide, created to
inform the public of accessible options when visiting New York City. Click here for the Official Accessibility Guide, http://www.nycgo.com/accessibility, produced by NYC & Company, the city's visitors' bureau.
Sensitivity Awareness
information has been incorporated into our organization's volunteer
orientation program. It is designed to heighten awareness about
disabilities, so that all Greeters are better able to make their
visitors' trip to New York City wonderful and memorable. In addition,
Big Apple Greeter has recruited and trained over 50 volunteer Greeters,
who themselves have visible or invisible disabilities, and want to
share their love of New York City with visitors.
